He's of the colour of the nutmeg. And of the heat of the ginger.... he is pure air and fire; and the dull elements of earth and water never appear in him, but only in patient stillness while his rider mounts him; he is indeed a horse, and all other jades you may call beasts. ~William Shakespeare, Henry V

WOW, WHAT A MONTH

I have been super busy lately that I don't know if I am coming or going. However, I cannot complain. It's a good busy.

On July 4th my horses got out of the pasture and decided to tour the country side. They ended up amost 6 miles south of town. I called one of my neighbors and she brought her horse trailer out to where they were and helped me load them up and bring them home. Thankfully they have not gotten out since....and it better stay that way.

The girls started their swimming lessons last week while my cousin from West Fargo was here to babysit for me since my full-time babysitter was on vacation. The girls absolutely love swimming and they are doing very well. Jessie had done so well in her preschool swimming class that they tested her out and bumped her up to level 1 swimming. It's fun to watch them have a good time in the pool. Their last swimming lesson is tomorrow. I will have pics then to post. On Saturday I, my girls, and a three of my guy friends went swimming at the pool. The four of us even started acting like some of the little kids in the pool. We were dunking each other, splashing around, and even playing chicken. All the lifeguards are highschool students that we know very well so we got away with acting stupid. I think they let us do it more for the entertainment value more than anything. Then we ended the evening by watching a couple of movies before calling it a night. It was super fun and I hope we can do it again soon.

I absolutely love my job at Hexagon Farm. With my position also comes a great amount of responsibility and care. More so than I thought when I first started. The data entry work that I do pretty much keeps the entire barn running. All the daily and weekly reports come from me, as well as the sow cards, lists of the pigs due to farrow, anything that needs to be bred, returns, and any pig that has aborted, come up lame, is sick, needs to be sold, new gilt arrivals, giving all the new gilts tag numbers and correct identification corresponding with their genetics, even any of the deaths, and also from time-to-time I have to look up and find the correct tag number for a sow that has lost her ID tag. It all shows up on my desk and comes to/through me. If I have anything incorrect in the computer, it will effect everyone from breeding all the way down to farrowing. I also go into the barn daily to collect some information that I need, so I stay PLENTY busy. At first, It thought it was just going to be a little monkey job. I had no idea how much care of the barn, and pigs, they put into my hands when they gave me this job. AND I LOVE IT!

Every week the barn manager has given me a few more tasks than the week before and I have been keeping up with it really well. I am also proud to say that I haven't had any big "Oh Shit" moments yet with my data entry. Last week the manager even let me call a meeting with all the barn managers and the employees that hand write most of the data. I went over changes I wanted to make to some forms so I could understand them better, demanded initials and dates on all the papers......and yes, even clean handwritting. Any form that I cannot read is now given back to the employee who filled it out and that employee has to rewrite ALL the information. The meeting lasted 2 hours because we all had good ideas and opinions on how to make things run well for all of us. They are all wonderful people and they all know their jobs, I think that's why the barn runs as smooth as it does.

Hexagon is also a barn full of pranksters too. Remember when I papered the managers office door after starting there? Well, the manager wasn't sure who it was, but narrowed it down to either myself or a gal that works in farrowing. I left my desk to get sow locations in room 23 one day and when I came back to my desk I noticed that my coffee was gone. One thing you don't do is mess with my coffee. Most people do not want to speak to me until I have had my morning coffee. I thought the guy who runs the breeding side of the barn took my coffee because we have been harrassing each other a lot lately. So, while breeding was on their 9 o'clock break, I took a tube of lube from the supply shelf and smeared a generous amount underneith the handles of all the coolers that the breeders use to carry the tubes of semen around in. It was very hard not to laugh when all 4 of the breeders put their hands in lube at the same exact time. Of course they started in on me. I told them I didn't do it and whoever took my coffee probably messed with their coolers. The line worked and they started going after some other people, but not until I and the breeders shouted at each other for a few minutes first. After a little while, the manager came into the room to see what the noise was about. He had a big shit-eating grin on his face and right away I knew.....It wasn't Wes who took my coffee....it was the manager. After the breeders went back into the barn, I told the manager what he did wasn't cool because I was almost positive it was Wes or one of his boys and now they are all going to come after me because I put lube on the coolers. The manager said he heard us shouting and decided to let us "fight it out" for a bit before coming into the room. When I walked away to start more paperwork, I heard the manager call from his office, "It's just all in good fun, Nellie. They will get you for me." So now I kiss ass with the breeders just for the sole fact they have access to semen and I do not want anything of mine spermed.

That has pretty much summed up my last month and a half. Nothing too exciting or out of the ordinary has happened, and I preferre to keep it that way.
